Letter from Mayor Sandy Shantz

The writing of this article coincides with my preparations for our Positive Pandemic Impacts Video, which we will be releasing virtually in May.  Thinking about our accomplishments here in Woolwich over the last year, makes me very proud of our residents, our staff, and our leaders.  We have an amazing community that cares for each other and who are very generous with their time and their resources, especially during these extraordinary times.  We did not see ourselves having to live through a pandemic, but we have, and we have overcome.  Our Positive Pandemic Impact Video will highlight all the positive, encouraging, and progressive endeavours that we have been able to experience and create as a township and give you a glimpse of how they have impacted our future planning.

We as a township have learned that not all of our heroes wear capes. Many wear face masks. We wanted to find a way to honour individuals, organizations and groups in our community who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes in healthcare, not-for-profit and community organizations to help provide us with resources and ways to cope – which is why we have launched our Pandemic Heroes Program.

We would like to encourage our community to consider Woolwich residents who have done extraordinary things over the last year to support our pandemic efforts and to honour them by nominating them as a Pandemic Hero. These honourees will receive a certificate and will be recognized during the Township’s Positive Pandemic Impacts Virtual Video on May 26th, 2021.

Spring is coming – it really is, and with spring comes new growth and new beauty.  Get outside, greet your neighbours and enjoy all that is good in life.  We are a resilient Township; vaccines are here, and the Region has successfully administered over 67,000 doses of the COVID vaccine; there are over 14,500 people within the Region that have been fully vaccinated.  If we are going to tackle this pandemic, we will do it one vaccination at a time.
