Letter from Mayor Sue Foxton

While our neighbours to the south try to sort out their political future, we of the North continue to face and live through interesting times. Each day we are living history. We have seen opposition parties’ work together for the good of our country. The Regional Municipalities meet regularly, working together to create a consistent life for our people.

The Township Mayors and CAOs are taking steps and actions to see how we can work together for the betterment of our people; working together to be more cost efficient but also to delve deeper into our rural lifestyle, attempting to bring more depth and versatility.  You may have seen this when the Township Councils came together to examine the KPMG report looking into how we offer services and where working together can be more advantageous for the rural residents.

Life carries on in the “New Normal” as we live through COVID-19.  Many cannot wait until 2020 is over, but the higher level of government is telling us that COVID-19 is not going away any time soon.

I state this not to frustrate, anger or depress you but to say we must now draw upon our strength as people, as community.  If we have to live through COVID-19 then let us do just that. One day at a time, one step at a time, make our moments count today and let tomorrow take care of itself.

Rural people have always been strong people, many coming from a farming background where hardships are the norm rather than the exception.  We have got this if we do not allow the information to overwhelm us.

We know what to do, we have heard it so many times it is imprinted upon our brains and we can do this.  We can live with washing our hands (why do I hear my mother’s voice every time I hear that statement?), social distance, wear our masks and live our lives.

These three simple rules do not take away our life, they instead protect it.  We can do this; we have so many means of communication, ways to reach out.

Once again the world has shifted and we living in this place and time must rise and stand strong just as our National Anthem states when we sing “the true North strong and free”.  We are Canadians and we will not only survive but we will thrive.

Together we are stronger, we are better. We are Canadian.
