Letter from Mike Harris – MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga

It’s great to have this opportunity as MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, serving Wilmot, Wellesley, Woolwich, and southwest Kitchener, to communicate my office’s priorities and accomplishments for our local constituents and Waterloo Region.

As you know, my office moved quickly, with the support of local municipal leaders, to push the new provincial government to protect “double hatter” volunteer firefighters and enable Fair and Open Tendering which will allow more local businesses to bid on Region of Waterloo infrastructure projects to save taxpayers millions. We were also able to fast track provincial approval for $2.1 million in funding for the new Gies Family Centre hospice in north Waterloo and expanded cardiac care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener.

In the last couple weeks, we contacted our government colleagues and received needed clarification that the Kissing Bridge Trailway is remaining in public hands, and welcomed the Hon. Christine Elliott to announce an additional investment of $28 million for midwifery care. This includes $1.2 million in Waterloo Region, including $230,000 for the St. Jacobs Midwives serving our rural community.

My focus moving forward is to ensure that we continue to deliver on issues which matter most. We are advocating everyday for more long-term care beds in our region, above and beyond the 148 recently approved, to end hallway medicine and to build up our infrastructure.

Last and most importantly, my office is receiving, and responding to, letters and calls on a daily basis from constituents who need assistance navigating government services and policy. My staff is available 9 to 4:30, Monday to Friday, to help on matters such as government IDs, health care access or job training and support for small businesses. Our office is always open for walk-ins or you can contact us at 519-669-2090 or mike.harrisco@pc.ola.org.

My new role as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry will complement an ability to serve Kitchener-Conestoga on issues important to you.

I look forward to hearing from you.
