The 3 pillars of our government’s 2020 budget are protect, support, and recover. It is a $45 billion plan to protect Ontarians from COVID-19, support families, individuals and employers, and remove barriers to our recovery. It is my pleasure to share what this budget means for you here in Waterloo Region.
I agree with Premier Ford and stand committed to stopping at nothing to keep Ontarians Safe from COVID-19 and the measures within this budget demonstrate our commitment to supporting you and your family. For parents with children under 12, we’re once again offering $200 per child for your family. As more businesses reopen safely, we also want to encourage you to explore your own backyard by providing a tax credit of 20 per cent for eligible tourism spending in Ontario during 2021, the Year of the Staycation.
We’re committed to giving back to the seniors who built this province. In 2021, we are creating the new Seniors’ Home Safety Tax Credit, which would be worth 25 per cent of up to $10,000 of eligible home improvement expenses. We’re also increasing funding to our Seniors Active Living Centre programs and extending the Ontario Community Support Program, which provides delivery of meals, medicines, and other essentials to low income seniors and those with disabilities. We owe it to our seniors to provide them with the supports they need to get through these difficult times.
Finally, our budget includes investments to improve broadband in our rural communities. We’re providing an additional $680 million over the next four years to double the Improving Connectivity in Ontario program and bring our total commitment to rural broadband expansion to nearly $1 billion. I had the pleasure of announcing an $11 million RFP for broadband infrastructure in our region over the summer and I will continue to be your strongest advocate at Queen’s Park for further investments.
As always, my office is here to assist you and your family. Whether you’re looking for more information on the budget or dealing with the provincial government, I am here to support you.
