Marriage Today – How to Break a Bloodline Curse

Dear Friend,

Have you ever had the thought that maybe your family was cursed? One of the most remarkable stories I’ve ever heard is about the so-called “Kennedy curse.” The Kennedys, of course, were one of the most politically influential families in American history. It’s mathematically impossible for any family to be this unlucky.

Patrick Kennedy was the patriarch, who came to the U.S. from Ireland in the 19th century. He was corrupt and had a son, Joseph Kennedy, who was also a corrupt man. Joe made his money selling liquor during prohibition and had open affairs with movie stars.

Even so, Joseph Kennedy became a successful politician and was serving as the U.S. ambassador to England when World War II began. He was known for being antisemitic and opposed the war. He didn’t want to go to war with Hitler. He wanted to do business with him! But that didn’t change the fact that three of his children—Joseph Jr., Kathleen, and John F. Kennedy—all joined the war effort for the United States.

In fact, John F. Kennedy emerged from World War II as a national hero after the PT boat he commanded was destroyed in the South Pacific. He sustained injuries but led many of his men to safety, receiving the Purple Heart and additional awards for heroism. But Joseph Jr., after surviving D-Day, died during an experimental test flight. Kathleen’s husband also died in the war.

World War II killed his son and son-in-law and ruined Joseph Kennedy’s reputation, so he decided to use his fortune to get his remaining children into politics. Of course, John became president but was assassinated in 1963. Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968. Ted nearly died in a plane crash in 1964.

Later generations weren’t spared either. Robert’s son, David, overdosed on drugs in 1984. Another son, Michael, died in a 1997 skiing accident. John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a plane crash in 1999. Robert’s granddaughter, Maeve Kennedy McKean, and her young son died in a canoeing accident earlier this year. And that’s not even the full list.

Could it be that the Kennedy family is cursed? Was it the sin of antisemitism that resulted in that curse? God told Abraham , “I’ll bless those who bless you and I’ll curse those who curse you.” No nation in the world has remained great after persecuting Israel.

But my point is not to educate you about the Kennedy family and its curse. All of us must come to the point of realizing we have a polluted bloodline, even if we have a seemingly decent family. We are all descendants of Adam and Eve—and Adam and Eve were cursed of God. But Abraham wasn’t. Abraham was blessed by God.

In Genesis 17, God told Abraham, “I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you” (Genesis 17:7).

The Jewish people are part of the genetic bloodline of Abraham and that’s why they are blessed. But through Christ Jesus, even non-Jews can receive the blessing of that bloodline. Through Jesus, Gentiles—the non-genetic children of Abraham—can receive the blessing God gave to Abraham.

How do you break a bloodline curse and receive the bloodline blessing of Abraham?

First, you have to understand the full purpose of the cross. Most Christians will say Jesus died on the cross “to pay for our sins.” That is true, but that’s only partly correct. Yes, he came to die for our sins so He could take the curse of sin away. But He also came to deliver the blessing of Abraham’s bloodline to us, and to redeem the polluted bloodline that curses us.

Through the cross, Jesus resolves the curse of our bloodline. By faith, we receive the Holy Spirit, who ministers every blessing of the cross to us.

Second, you have to repent and receive Jesus as your Lord. This blessing is only available to those who follow Jesus. This doesn’t mean we have to be perfect, but if there’s something in our lives that isn’t right, we have to deal with it. Jesus said, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14).

For instance, if you’re antisemitic like Joseph Kennedy, you may have a problem. Jesus is Jewish. Mary was Jewish. The Bible was written by Jews. Antisemitism doesn’t work for a Christian. You may be on your way to heaven, but if you will not give grace to others, then God’s grace stops in your life. Your potential blessing stops in your life.

So we must renounce the curse of our bloodlines and receive the bloodline blessing of Abraham, through Jesus. We have to have faith that Jesus died on the cross, removed our sins and broke the curse.

The polluted bloodline of your family was broken by Jesus. So by faith, from this moment forward, you can accept Him and be of the bloodline of Abraham. Stop identifying yourself by your polluted bloodline and the curse that comes from sin.

Jesus died to remove the curse of sin and restore you to the pure, blessed bloodline of God. Stop expecting curse. Start expecting blessing.
