Q&A with The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth

Q: I noticed my dog is scratching a lot more lately.  Should I be concerned?

A: Summertime is definitely a season we see more itchy dogs!  The common causes of scratching this time of year are fleas and environmental allergies.  Even indoor pets can get fleas!  Dogs (and cats) can be allergic to common summer plants such as grasses, weeds and trees.  Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to treat or prevent fleas, as well as treatment for summertime allergies, to get your pet feeling better quickly.  If your pet has been outside and is itchy, sometimes a bath using cool water and oatmeal shampoo can temporarily relieve their symptoms.
