Q&A with The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth

Q: Does the flea and tick medication from the grocery store work?

A: The flea and tick prevention products available over the counter at pet or grocery stores are not the same as the ones prescribed by your veterinarian.  Veterinary prescribed products have gone through extensive testing to ensure they are safe and effective.  Most store-bought products are not guaranteed, and may only be effective against certain life cycles of the parasites, or for a very short period of time.  It is important to note that some store-bought products may cause adverse reactions in pets, and some of these products are HIGHLY toxic to cats.  Always be sure you are reading and following the label of any product that you use, and contact your veterinarian with any questions you have about suitable flea and tick products.
