Reading Corner – Illuminae

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

When someone thinks of books, normally your mind goes to a story written through a wall of text divided into chapters. A person’s mind doesn’t normally think of a story told through a case file.

Illuminae is one of the most uniquely formatted books I have ever read. It follows Kady Grant and Ezra Mason as they are forced off their planet and into space as they flee for their lives. Working together from separate sides of the universe, fighting not only a corrupt AI unit but also a dangerous plague and a fleet of people who want to dispose of them, Kady and Ezra are forced to do everything in their power to save everyone aboard their ships.

Not only does this book have an engaging story but, as stated before, it is also told through files. Some pages are interview logs while others are descriptions of security camera footage. Every page is something new, and it always keeps you on your toes.

When reading this book you truly feel like a detective trying to figure out the mystery. It has an alluring presence that keeps your eyes glued on the page, which is thanks to Kaufman and Kristoff’s story telling. Together they are an unstoppable duo creating a believable world that will keep anyone looking for a marvelous adventure, hooked.

This book is perfect for lovers of science fiction and/or people who don’t like long drawn out novels. It is an intriguing story that almost anyone can just fly through feeling like no time passed at all.
