Shmoo Review – Rebecca

I find that nowadays if a film shows a lack of diversity I will get drawn out of the experience as a whole. It has become distracting to see a film that is so focused on white actors. At least for myself, it’s hard to lose myself in the story if it is not properly portraying the cultural climate. Lily James and Armie Hammer are both talented actors in their regard, starring as our love interests of the film. Lily James steals the show from the other talent as she seems to rip down any wall that might have been put between her and the audience and bares a raw performance; something audiences have come to know her by. This thriller/romance mix is an ode to both genres as the director (Ben Wheatley) effortlessly transitions through them, redefining the genre with this interpretation of the classic story, ‘Rebecca’. If you’re a fan of the mystery and chase in a story, then this film might be right for you. Or if you enjoy a gentle coming-of-age flick, you might want to check this one out as well. It’s important to draw your conclusions in life, a message I believe this film really drives home. The relationships between individuals are never what they seem. The relationships between politics are never what they seem. I’ll be thinking about this film for a while more… feel free to join me.
