Spring is in the Air: And Things are Popping Up All Over!

This time of year is such an exciting time for gardeners. We are all itching to get our fingers in the dirt. Many of you have started seeds inside, have a stash of seed packets that you are dreaming of planting and are anxiously watching for perennial sprouts to appear in your gardens.

The Woolwich Gardeners are very excited about our upcoming Plant Sale on Saturday May 8. This is the perfect opportunity for area gardeners to get “tried and true” plants for their gardens. It is also a chance to thin out and share some of your plants that you have in abundance. Donations can be dropped off on the evening of Friday May 7 between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm at the Elmira Home Hardware parking lot (north side under the murals). We are accepting potted and labelled plants as well as other garden items.

This year, Woolwich Gardeners would like to emphasize the importance of protecting our natural spaces by NOT including certain non-native and invasive plants. These plants tend to take over gardens, forests, meadows and waterways, wreaking havoc on natural biosystems. A list of culprits includes Creeping Jenny, English Ivy, Lily of the Valley, Goutweed, Periwinkle, Honeysuckle and Bugleweed to name just a few. A more comprehensive list can be found at www.ontarioinvasiveplants.ca. Take it from gardeners who have tried to get rid of unwanted and overbearing plants, you do NOT want to try these invasive species in your yards!

Hope to see your masked face at our Plant Sale and have fun digging!

Woolwich Gardeners is a community non-profit organization that will be hosting Zoom speakers during these CoVid times.
